Don't try this at home! It was a few minutes before I took this shot that the radio call from Salt City Center was urgent, "Do you know where you are?" It was a brightly beautiful day and for once the Wind River Mountains were not living up to its name! But no matter our assurances, the FAA Controller was insistent. "You're 1500 AGL (above ground level)! Terrain ahead," he advised! The flying pilot is the pilot in command, and the Controller's information and experience, while valuable, is not situationally aware like a clean glare shield on a clear day. We continued in smooth air eastbound on our route home.
This shot and the one I took moments later are extraordinarily rare for anyone to see so close because of the typical extremes of wind and weather at this location! We'd passed nearby more than once in both directions and this was the only time we ever ventured over the top. Farther north Gannett Peak (13,804') still towered over us, Granite Peak (10,404') was 1,000' below us, as our magic carpet Husky N63PR skimmed by Wind River Peak (13,192') in the Popo Agie Wilderness. It was some of the most exhilarating flying and photographing ever. With better equipment than Paul's last commercial flight in an L1011 and with a very competent auto-pilot, he is mine and I am his, we discussed and decided! Good to go! Enjoy the view . . .
