Every May the tulips and other spring bulbs require care, removing dead leaves, dividing, replanting, renewing mulch, fertilizing, and more. It starts with these beauties but there are so many other chores that gardeners must attend to. The hard work is necessary but beauty and creativity are a worthy goal. There is for me an analogy for the best things in life in both the work and the beauty of this flower. I love growing and painting them.
Tulips are beloved by many all over the world. I was raised in western Michigan in a town with roots in Slavic Europe and in the Netherlands. No matter which was your own heritage, most everyone celebrated the Dutch bulbs grown in the area and the traditions of Holland, Michigan year upon year. As a youngster I had a pair of beautifully decorated wooden shoes, and as a young adult I carried a Dutch surname for a time. You might say tulips are in my blood!
