I love the Star Valley surrounding Afton, Wyoming! It's where my Husky was built and where we returned every August for years for its annual maintenance check. This day was hot and the shadows were strong. That couldn't keep me inside when there were horses to photograph. I'd watched this pair from my truck and noticed how attentive they were to each other. The stallion was protective and his mare was demure. They moved close to the fence that separated us and posed nicely. How could I refuse that kind of invitation?
The raw photo took a series of edits to reduce the strong shadows on the stallion's face and shoulder. I found that using the hot sun streaming in from the left was the best way to perfect the image. What I love most about this shot is the tenderness these horses show to one another. What I did best in my edits was to use what was already there by letting the intense sun be golden bright on the hide and allow that light to glow like a bonfire.
