Summer Snow is a variety of crabapple tree that doesn’t produce fruit but covers its branches with so many blossoms that it looks like snowfall. We planted a five foot bare root tree last year. It didn’t go well! Within it’s first 24 hours roaming deer ate one-half its height and Japanese beetles ate every single leaf that was left. One year later the tree is shorter than when we planted it but it lives inside a pretty steel trellis to keep the deer at bay. The beetles haven’t appeared (yet). First came photos as buds and blossoms appeared; now here’s my painting of the delicate flowers. If this little tree survives for a few years it may eventually earn its name, Summer Snow. The original is a large painting of a small branch on a tiny tree. I love the idea of celebrating anything that survives against stiff odds.
