The day was grey overcast above pumice, rock and snow, so nature decided the black and white scheme. I created the ombré effect with filters and post production decisions to enhance the dark ridge with McCoy Peak in the middle distance between Mt St Helens and Mount Adams. I love the easy blend from dark to light and foreshortening the distance. It looks real but abstract too and very modern for such an ancient place.
This speaks survival to me. Flying the rim of Mount St Helens thirty years after its cataclysmic eruption, looking east toward Mount Adams 34 miles away. The steam blast was deadly; loss of life cannot be restored but the forests recovered more quickly than forecast.
