One of the "Little Girl" series hybridized in the 1960s, this hardy magnolia exhibits elegance and simplicity in nature. Those virtues influenced how I staged the photograph. I grew the plant, sculpted it toward Japanese Niwaki forms and then shaped this image to convey its simple, elegant form. The rich magenta color is also its native attribute. Meet “Jane” who comes from southern stock. Her family name is Magnolia, they of hot days and humid nights. Now she lends her tropical looks to our colder Midwestern climate and gives me a smile for each elegant magenta blossom she unfolds. She dresses in hundreds of them and each one is a rival of the others.
