I'm 2500' above the ground, piloting a taildragger airplane toward the sun over the spectacular Palouse, heading 40 miles further toward Lewiston ID for fuel. There are eight dams in the lower Columbia and together they made far-inland Lewiston a port city carrying grain in barges west to Portland and the world beyond. In the early light the blues of the river are radiantly indigo to teal with dramatic deep shadows even later in the day with a strong midday sun overhead.
