Here we are at the Grotto in Devil's Bay near Spanish Harbor in the British Virgins. The rocks frame a woman in what locals know as the Baths--shallow, warm water in what feels like deep privacy. I was as surprised by her presence as she would have been had she known I was there. The rocks held her perfectly within glowing light--I frame her as she frames the scene out to sea. We talked later and agreed it was a good collaboration if I sent her a print. There's another image in this collection called The Rocks at Devil's Bay. Both of them use negative space as an artistic device to tell a story.
The hollow between the rocks reveals a catamaran beyond while within the grotto the rocks frame a woman. In both cases I noticed the beautiful colors of rocks and water but chose instead to emphasize what they held. In rethinking that decision I've redeveloped both images to reveal those magnificent colors. The enormous rocks strewn along the beach are the story with the catamaran and woman just brief chapters in the life of this magnificent place. They belong together.
