Image taken at The Huntington Cactus Garden and conveyed in infrared to emphasize amazing detail and contrast. In addition to prints the original photograph is available. This was a so-so shot, too much going-on for my taste. I’m not a fan of sharp, pointy things like cactus and generally prefer the soft curves and arabesques of gentler things. But you learn from challenges and I wanted to learn how to make, or at least to simulate a good infra-red image. I worked for weeks making masks, blending tones, using color translated to black/white filters. In the end I sent the finished image for critique to a friend who’d offered to loan me his IR rig. He loved it and proved it by buying a print. Made me want to get serious about black and white images but it’s just so hard not to prefer good color! So this one is a rarity in my work.
