Along with most of the planet we’ve been homebound for more than a year and sold our airplane a year ago. In the recent six weeks we’ve made up for the long isolation with commercial flights to see family in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, then Denver, and Los Angeles. I was born to fly but it took decades to discover that. Paul and I trade who gets the window seat because pilots love to watch! That’s what is happening in my newest painting . . . the bee is a pilot super hero without a cape! I call it Born2Fly because bees are far more talented than we’ve been taught!
This painting began with Foxgloves in my garden. Twenty years ago Paul gave me a packet of seed purchased in a hardware store on Bainbridge Island near Seattle. The seed is perennial so they appear each year without fail, sometimes in surprising places. I liked the symmetry of this particular stem and find the tubular flowers are a beacon for bumblebees and hummingbirds. The bright spots on each lip are tinged with freckles focused in white to draw the bee's attention like landing lights on runways. Dozens of bees invited my painterly meditation on their industry and our dependence upon their pollinating work. Here I summarized the daily scene in one single fellow who is on speed and altitude, lined up and configured, ready to land!
Friends ask if we miss flying. With thousands of hours in the cockpit,Paul doesn't; I do. The beauty of Earth, diversity in wild places, complexity of cities, and the magnitude of accomplishment in people is stored as images on data cards and always in our memories. Our experiences flying together will be our treasures forever. We love our new life more than we ever imagined and so there's no room for any sadness over an empty hangar.
