Here I’m sailing into the 500 year old port of Kristiansund beneath the Atlantic Road, an area where the Grip family has lived for generations and whose members are our family. The tug is the subject, lines of the bridge and the town frame an embrace.
What I love about this scene is the tug moving onto center stage in the Skagerrak (strait) and out into the Norwegian sea. I always saw the potential for painting the scene and finally years later, here it is. Not far offshore is the 200 island Grip Archipelago, once a thriving fishing port, where now there are no permanent residents. Its 800 year old wooden church with 500 year old wall paintings and a village of small, colorful buildings are a favorite for summer visitors. Tiny Grip Island has the tallest lighthouse in Norway.
